The Digest in Nottinghamshire

Gardens of Giving, a community interest company in Ashfield, aims to empower youth with gardening skills and residents with new abilities. Scrap wood will be provided to schools, colleges, and community groups for crafting planters, while seed donations kickstart the first crops.

The Northern Lights dazzled the East Midlands on Tuesday, delighting stargazers who managed to capture the spectacle. Thanks to clear skies, folks in Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, and Derbyshire got a glimpse of the aurora borealis, caused by charged particles from the sun hitting the Earth's atmosphere.

Take a look at this stunning photo from Mark Haslehurst.

Last week, we discussed Nottingham City Council's planning application for a new bridge. Today, at a meeting on Wednesday, April 17, councillors unanimously backed the proposals, marking a significant step forward in the project. Full construction will not start until Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Planning Committee has also approved the plans, expected in the coming months.

Despite facing multiple closures due to bad weather, the 10-day art installation event organised by Mansfield District Council drew in nearly 8,500 attendees, including visitors from as far as Cornwall and Pontefract. The event ran from Thursday the 4th of April to Saturday the 13th of April and showcased a diverse range of artworks and captured the attention of art enthusiasts from across the region and beyond.

Civil News 🏛️

All 26,000 Nottingham council homes will be checked over in a bid to make sure they are up to new standards.

Nottingham faces a shortfall of 6,000 new homes due to limited space, city council officials report. To address this, several councils are collaborating on the Greater Nottingham Strategic Plan, aimed at meeting future housing demand.

A list of Nottingham City Council meetings for April can be found here. The next comes on the 18th of April with the Nottinghamshire Pension Fund Committee. This will be live streamed on Youtube as all meetings are, HERE.
