The Digest in Nottinghamshire
Local councils across Nottinghamshire have outlined their key priorities for the upcoming year, focusing on delivering Levelling Up projects, building more houses, and supporting leisure activities. Meanwhile, Nottinghamshire County Council has set its focus on repairing roads, improving social care, and relocating its headquarters.
Nottingham City Council plans to close four libraries, avoiding the more drastic option of shutting down most of them. Earlier this year, Nottinghamshire Live reported that the council was considering keeping only three of its 15 libraries open.
Two of Nottingham’s cherished football fanzines have been revived, thanks to a project by the city’s cultural magazine, LeftLion. Every edition of Notts County’s ‘The Pie’ and Nottingham Forest’s ‘Brian’ has been digitized, with a dedicated team combing through all the back issues. Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the University of Nottingham, and the British Library, these fanzines are now available to read online for the first time.
Extra Beats
Businesses in three Nottinghamshire towns are urging Broxtowe Borough Council to reverse the decision to scrap an hour's free parking, implemented in January. Traders in Beeston, Stapleford, and Eastwood claim the changes to council car parks have been devastating for their businesses. They have gathered over 3,000 signatures, which will be presented at an extraordinary council meeting on Thursday.
Nottinghamshire County Council leaders are considering outsourcing school meals and other catering services. A group of councillors has recommended partnering with a business or another council to save money, as these services currently lose £2.5 million annually. The review includes school meals, hot meal delivery to vulnerable residents, grounds maintenance, and facilities management.
Civil News 🏛️
I am guessing everyone knows this, but the only thing to talk about here is that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced a general election for July 4th.
